Those who were lucky enough to be on the first ADSC ‘Mexican Bus’ excursion, some ten years ago, are still reminiscing. Now, the Mexican Bus is back!

Join Kimberly Manning Aker and Alice Jurow (aka Girl Guides) on Sunday, June 29
for a day devoted to Frida, Diego, our continued exploration of Spanish Colonial Revival style and convivial Deco spirit!

Art-loving early-birds can start the day at 10 am, with a visit to the Frida Kahlo exhibit at SFOMA. We’ll have a block of group-rate tickets available (for bus tour guests only; reservations by June 18 essential).

The famed Mexican Bus – a unique vintage vehicle filled with festive decor and music – will depart from in front of the museum at 11:45 sharp. We’ll head to Mission Dolores to see the original architecture that was so influential and inspirational, view magnificent Mission High School and handsome Everett Middle School, two fine examples of Spanish Colonial Revival from the late 1920s, and proceed to City College of San Francisco for a special curated viewing of Diego Rivera’s massive mural masterpiece.

Around 3:30 pm, we will bid ‘adios’ to the bus, and visit a “secret” 1925 ceiling fresco, before arriving at our final destination – an exquisite 1924 private club, with rare vaulted embossed-leather ceilings credited to Anthony Heinsbergen – for a hosted tapas buffet and no-host cocktails at ‘vintage’ prices. Subject to space availability, ADSC members and guests who aren’t able to come on the tour may join us for this festive late afternoon “velada” (cocktail party). Reservations are required for the party; no walk-ins.

The Mexican Bus seats only 42, so reserve early! (Mexican Bus seats will be guaranteed for the first 42 reservations, and we will add a second bus if demand is high.) Both our start and end-points are downtown, so save on parking and take public transportation – Powell St. BART is about equidistant.

Deco-era daywear or vintage Mexican attire is greatly appreciated! You’ll want to be appropriately dressed for afternoon cocktails, but do wear comfortable shoes as there will be some walking. Bring water and pack a small snack to tide you over until we reach the buffet.
